When you traveling with children, plan activities to keep them occupied so they won’t get bored and keep asking, “Are we almost there yet?” Here are 4 classic games to play.
I Spy. The first player will decide on an object either found in the car or in the scenery. (The object has to stay in view while playing that round.) The player will say, “I spy with my little eye something (blank).” The person fills in one clue about the object. Family members guess what it is. When the object is guess, the next person takes a turn.
Alphabet Game. The object is to be the first person to find all of the letters (in alphabetical order) as they read billboard signs, car license plates, and business signs. For instance, if I saw the letter ‘A’ in a billboard sign advertisement for the Appleby’s restaurant chain, I would say, “A in Appleby’s.” Then I would try to find the letter ‘B.’ This can be challenging when trying to find the letters Q, X, and Z!
Going on a Picnic. One family member will say, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing (blank).” Then she mentions an item that starts with the letter ‘A’ such as avocados. The next person says, “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing some avocados and some (blank).” Then she mentions something that starts with the letter ‘B.’ Play continues until you have gone through the whole alphabet. If someone forgets an item, she is out. This is a challenge to remember all 26 items!
License Plate Game. You’ll need paper and pencils for this activity. As you are driving along, see if you can spot a license plate from every state. When you see the license plate, call out, “Connecticut.” If you’re the first person to call out the state, you get credit for that state. Write it down. Each player writes down the names of the states that they find. The winner is the person who got all 50 states. You might want to modify the game to find only 25 different state plates.
