A woman may feel intimidated because she does not have very much experience owning and maintaining a vehicle. There are five essential automotive maintenance things that every woman should know how to do. Have your father, brother, or boyfriend show you how to do them. If they are unavailable, check your local community education program for a powder puff mechanics class.
Here are the five things to learn.
First, know how to check the oil. Be able to find the oil dipstick and know how to read it. Check the oil often so that the oil doesn’t get low and ruin the engine of your car.
Second, learn how to change a flat tire. Know where your car’s jack is and how to get at your spare tire. Get plenty of practice so that you will feel comfortable and confident if you ever need to change a tire.
Third, know how to check the level of the fluid for your windshield wipers. Know how to fill it up when it gets low. While this isn’t as critical as knowing how to change a tire, it sure is embarrassing to have to have a mechanic do such a simple thing.
Fourth, when buying tires, make sure you get a warranty. When you have a warranty, the tire dealers will rotate and balance your tires for free. You might also want to have them check the air pressure at the same time.
Fifth, find a trustworthy mechanic. Then, when you have car problems, you know that he will be honest in dealings with you.
There are other things you should also consider. Always carry a cell phone for emergencies to call someone for roadside assistance. Don’t have an old model car because it will need more repairs than a newer model. And, be sure to have your trusted mechanic check out the used car before you buy it.
