Tips for Traveling with Pets

Many people choose to take their pets along with them when they travel in their car. Here are a few tips to follow so that both you and your pet will have a pleasant journey.

Never leave your pet in a parked car. Always park in the shade and roll the windows down.

Have plenty of water and be sure to offer some to your pet on a regular basis.

Take frequent stops. Stretch your legs, your pet’s legs, and allow your pet to relieve himself.

Have good ventilation in your car. You’ll keep Bowser happy and prevent the driver from getting drowsy.

If you think you’ll use a carrier cage, make sure you get one way in advance. Place it out with the door open so that your pet can investigate it and become familiar and used to it. Then, when it comes time to be placed in the carrier, your pet will not freak out and become uncontrollable.

Before going on a long road trip with your pet, take several small ones. This will get your pet used to the travel carrier and to the motion of the car.

Consider getting special plastic covers and floor mats for your car. This will protect your car in case your pet has an accident. It will be easier to clean up the mess and you won’t have unpleasant lingering odors.

Feed your pet three to four hours before leaving. Do not feed your pet in a traveling car. This helps so your pet does not get an upset stomach.

When traveling with a dog, keep the curtains closed to your motel room. This will keep your pet from barking at people who walk past the window and disturbing other motel guests.

Make sure you have identification tags for your pet. Take an extra leash in case something happens to the first one.
